The internet is the world\u2019s biggest library with billions of pages of information.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t know the exact address of the website you need then finding the information you require can be quite a challenge.\u00a0 This page will hopefully give you a few pointers to help you with searching the internet and a few considerations for checking the information you have found.<\/p>\n

Search Engines<\/strong>
\nThere are lot of search engines<\/strong> for you to choose from and\u00a0they work in different ways<\/strong>, try a few engines to find the web address you are looking for.
\nSearch engines usually have advanced search options which allow you to refine your search.\u00a0Most of these allow you to use logical operators such as \u2018and\u2019, \u2018not\u2019, \u2018or\u2019, \u2018includes\u2019, \u2018greater than\u2019 and \u2018less than\u2019 to narrow down what you are looking for.\u00a0Click the advanced search link on the search engine webpage and experiment with the different options. There are some search engines below to get you started.<\/p>\n

Trusted Starting Points<\/strong>
\nSearch engines can often give you thousands of results and many of them don\u2019t have the information you need.\u00a0 This is the time to use a trusted starting point where you can then follow the links to hopefully find what you are looking for.\u00a0 Good examples will be; news providers such as TV stations<\/strong> or newspapers<\/strong>, government sites<\/strong>, magazines<\/strong>, university websites<\/strong>, charities<\/strong>, governing bodies<\/strong>, unions<\/strong> and businesses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Information Quality<\/strong>
\nIt is very easy to publish a web site and sometimes the information you have found may not be as useful as it appears.\u00a0 Use this 8 point check list to help you decide if the information is what you need:<\/p>\n

  1. Is it clear who has written the information?<\/a><\/li>\n
  2. Are the aims of the site clear?<\/a><\/li>\n
  3. Does the site achieve its aims?<\/a><\/li>\n
  4. Is the site relevant to me?<\/a><\/li>\n
  5. Can the information be checked?<\/a><\/li>\n
  6. When was the site produced?<\/a><\/li>\n
  7. Is the information biased in any way?<\/a><\/li>\n
  8. Does the site tell you about choices open to you?<\/a>

    Referencing<\/strong>
